About Dr. Ricardo Cohen, MD

Dr. Ricardo Cohen is currently the Director of the Center for Obesity and Diabetes at the Oswaldo Cruz German Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His main area of research interest is the role of metabolic surgery in halting the progression of diabetes chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Cohen is a pioneer in metabolic surgery. In 2005 he performed in humans the first duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB), a procedure also referred to as the Rubino’s operation, with the primary intent of controlling type 2 diabetes in patients without obesity.

He graduated in 1984 and did his residency in General Surgery at the University of São Paulo, Brazil and was Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Sao Paulo, from 1990 to 1996. He is the recipient of many international awards including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Scientific Achievement in 2012.

In 2013, Dr. Cohen was recognized as one of the 30 ASMBS members who most contributed to the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery. Dr. Cohen has over 300 published papers and book chapters, and 8 books edited or co-edited on laparoscopic and bariatric/metabolic surgery. He delivered around 1,500 lectures in National and International meetings. In 2016, Dr. Cohen was the President of the 21st World Congress of IFSO. He was the President of the Brazilian Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (2011-2012) and President of IFSO-Latin American Chapter (2017-2018).
