Diabetes Surgery Summit – DSS
The Diabetes Surgery Summit is a series of international consensus conferences for the development of evidence-based guidelines on surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes (metabolic surgery).
The series has been co-directed since its inception by Professors Francesco Rubino (Italy), Philip Schauer (USA), David Cummings (USA), and Lee Kaplan (USA) and it has been organised in partnership with leading diabetes and surgical organisations since 2007. The DSS has played an instrumental role in the recognition of surgery as a standard treatment option for diabetes, contributing to the development of the emerging field of metabolic surgery. Guidelines developed through the DSS have been endorsed by professional organisations around the world and have influenced changes in healthcare policies and coverage of surgery globally.
The First Diabetes Surgery Summit (DSS-I) was held in Rome in March 2007, with the participation of leading scholars in the fields of diabetes, surgery, basic science and public health. The DSS-I is widely recognized as the event that introduced the concept and practice of metabolic and diabetes surgery. The initiative also raised awareness of the weight-independent mechanisms of action of gastrointestinal surgery, inspiring research on novel device-based approaches that target the gut to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.
In 2015 the second DSS was held in London, UK.
DSS-II guidelines, endorsed by over 50 international scientific societies, including the American Diabetes Association, the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes UK, and many medical and surgical organizations from around the world led to the formal recognition of surgery as a standard-of-care treatment of type 2 diabetes.
In the early months of 2020, the 3rd DSS was held virtually to develop recommendations for prioritisation of elective metabolic and bariatric surgery during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
