About Prof. Geltrude Mingrone, MD, PhD

Professor Mingrone is Chief of the Division of Obesity and Related Disorders at the University Hospital Fondazione Policlinico A. Gemelli IRCCS and is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University in Rome. She is also visiting Professor of Diabetes and Nutrition at King’s College London since 2015.

Beyond practicing internal medicine and endocrinology, she has a long-standing interest in research, particularly in the field of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Professor Mingrone has written more than 360 peer-reviewed publications in high impact international journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, J Clin Invest, BMJ, Diabetes Care, Diabetes, Diabetologia. She is a former Expert Member of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in the nutrition panel, former Executive Director of the European Chapter of the American College of Nutrition, Member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Nutrition, and the current Chair of the Study-Group on Metabolic Surgery of the EASD.

Professor Mingrone was also part of the expert panel for the joint clinical guidelines of the European Association for the study of Diabetes (EASD) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on the treatment of diabetes. Her research interests include mechanisms of remission of type 2 diabetes after metabolic surgery and the effects of very-low-calorie diets. She specialized in research on insulin resistance with the infusion of stable isotopes, body composition measurements with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and 24h energy expenditure measurements using indirect calorimetric systems including the Calorimetric Chamber. Professor Mingrone graduated from the Catholic University, School of Medicine in Rome, Italy, and is Board Certified in Gastroenterology, Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases, and Forensic Medicine. She earned a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Ghent in Belgium.
